Recent Highlights

My approach

I am driven by personal stories and global developments, making sense of both and sharing that which matters.

I reach that which remains, and will remain, outside of search engine indexing and AI training data.

I keep my cheer and open mind, while staying in control and thinking several steps ahead.

What I offer

  • In-depth, well-structured, multi-lingual desk research and fixing
  • Broad network of experts and notable individuals, as well as interesting characters from all walks of life in Poland and Germany
  • Field research, interviewing and multi-lingual translating (Polish-German-English)
  • Creative idea consultation and fact-checking
  • Field audio and video recording, with own equipment
  • Video editing and post-production
  • On-the-ground transport and logistics coordination

I work in English, Polish and German, I use Ukrainian and Russian too.

Background and Experience

With nearly 15 years of professional experience in research, journalism and project management, I am level-headed and responsible, while staying curious and creative.

Over the years I have worked on a broad range of projects: from analysing pharma industry policy to coordinating strategy development at a major bank, from aiding government-level public consultations to running an impactful podcast/newsletter combo during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since 2022 I focus on production for media organisations as well as developing and producing my own content.

Originally from Gdańsk, Poland I graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science as well as the National University of Singapore, with a concentration in social studies and public policy.

From a Far Country

The presidential election has been Poland's political event of the year so far and rightly so: the vote seems decisive to the outlook for Donald Tusk's government and the country's internal and international trajectories.

Qatar's Alaraby TV, a leading outlet in the Gulf region and beyond, wished to bring their audiences up to speed with the arguably somewhat exotic themes that move Polish people. I worked with their European correspondent, Muath Hamed, to deliver a comprehensive, yet not overwhelming coverage of the vote.

My responsibilities involved both field production (research and fixing) and videography, as well as providing expert commentary.

Correspondent: Muath Hamed

A taste for Poland

I researched and organised a four-day shoot at four locations for a culinary documentary commissioned by the German public television (ARD/SWR).

My engagement included:

  • researching themes and potential characters
  • fixing shoot dates and locations
  • co-managing logistics
  • translating interviews (on location and in post)
  • shooting BTS
  • post-production fact-checking and liaising with the characters

Client: Alpha Container Pictures

Director: Norbert Lübbers

DoP: Chris Caliman

Sound: Julio Rodriguez

Personal note: I was extremely happy with how the piece came together - all of our characters were amazing, very open and generous with access, while the team did a top job of making them look and sound their best.

The documentary is a part of series produced by Alpha Container Pictures, available here.

A few words on re-democratization

David French invited Aleksandra Gliszczyńska-Grabias, a law professor at the Polish Academy of Sciences, to share her insights about re-establishing the rule of law following an authoritarian turn. Perhaps the Polish experience could have relevance for those envisioning a post-Trumpian era?

Since Aleksandra was in Warsaw and David was not, I played a part in helping them sound like they were in the same room, by doing location sound recording with a foolproof setup.

The full transcript of the conversation is available here.

Who wins Germany

I worked with Channel 4 News team to cover the German federal election. My tasks included preliminary research and fact-checking; local fixing (interviewees and locations) and scheduling; translations and field production.

Team highlights included: successfully arranging last-minute access to a final pre-election event with Friedrich Merz, including presenting on-site during the event; gaining access to some of the key AfD politicians, including Alice Weidel, Beatrix von Storch (long-form studio interview) and Rene Springer (on-location interview); safely accessing two AfD rallies and gaining relevant vox pops; securing valuable live guests on a very short notice.

Two pieces about protest culture

Together with Kristjan Knall, the creator of Unignorierbar: Die Stimme der Wiederstands, we made two fast-paced gonzo-style pieces focused around the German left-wing protest culture.

We travelled to Riesa, a small town in Saxony, where we documented the actions of people protesting against the AfD in midst of that party's conference, their confrontations with the police as well as the voices of local people.

Back in Berlin, a few weeks later, we followed the activists protesting against the "Welt Economic Forum", a high-level business conference attended by industry leaders and top politicians, organised by Axel Springer AG.

Auf wiedersehen, Herr Scholz!

I worked with Channel 4 News covering the no-confidence vote, which ended the "traffic-light" coalition government in Germany. Coincidentally, in the same week we witnessed the collapse of the Assad regime, so our piece bridged the two developments through reaching out to members of Berlin's vibrant Syrian community. My tasks included preliminary research, location scouting and fact-checking; local fixing (interviewees and locations) and scheduling; translations and field production.

Team highlights included: presenting the evening programme from inside the Reichstag building; following a provocative far-right demonstration, and the clashes with counter-protesters; running vox pops on Sonnenallee, in the heart of Berlin's multiethnic Neukölln district and among the patrons of Berlin Philharmonic; accessing AfD's parliamentary whip, Dr Berndt Baumann.

Borderland, interzone

I worked for the New York Times Opinion Audio team, accompanying Masha Gessen in their reporting in Poland.

My tasks included chiefly location sound recording of about 20 interviews, as well as local fixing, driving and translating.

The piece and its accompanying podcast are pending.

Poland vs high water

I accompanied Samira Ataei, a foreign correspondent for the Belgian daily De Standaard, on an assignment covering the flooding in the Polish region of Lower Silesia.

My responsibilities included preliminary research and planning, local fixing (interviews and locations), translating, security and logistics.

We managed to reach and report from some hard to reach heavily-affected locations, including Stronie Śląskie and Lewin Brzeski; tie in national politics, by accessing the former mayor of Wrocław Bogdan Zdrojewski as well as Paweł Kukiz, who we met serendipitously volunteering in his home town; and give voice to a number of horrendously affected local residents.

Chasing Alice, part one

The AfD has been posed to score big in the 2024 regional elections in several German states. Could this be a sign of things to come at the federal level?

I helped Matt Frei's Channel 4 News crew seek out the answers on AfD's campaign trail, and we definitely went further than most international journalists.

Forst, a remote town near the Polish border, seemed like a non-obvious destination, but it paid off: we accessed a notoriously suspicious crowd and gathered some excellent footage and interviews.

My responsibilities included:

  • preliminary research and fixing
  • securing access to AfD's campaign event in a remote Brandenburg town (as the only TV crew)
  • securing interview with AfD's regional lead candidate
  • liaising with party officials and ensuring crew safety during voxpops
  • fact-checking and translations

Polish summer jam

The experimental duo An-Hoer performed an intense and playful set at a secret nano-festival in the heart of Poland's northern woodlands. And I was there to capture the vibes.

The oneiric melodies mutating into noisy industrial motorik went very well with the lazy midday sun (and the equally relaxed audience). I aimed to capture Wojtek and Piotr's emotions as they conjured one surprising groove after another, as well as to do justice to the fresh, warm breeze that graced us that day.

Five stories in six days

I worked with Lenora Chu, the Monitor's Special Correspondent, to provide a nuanced view of the post-election transformation of the Polish state institutions and society. After eight years of increasingly illiberal rule of Law and Justice, a new center-right coalition set out to return to status quo ante. Or was it?

To make sense of the intentions and actions of the new government, we spend several busy days interviewing journalists, politicians, experts and ordinary Poles.

My engagement included:

  • researching themes and characters
  • managing access and logistics
  • translating interviews (on location and during editing)
  • photographing the characters
  • post-production fact-checking and liaising with the characters

Client: The Monitor

Reporter: Lenora Chu

Of choppers and voters

I accompanied Rob Schmitz during his summer tour of Poland's hotspots: the border with Belarus and Civic Platform's campaign trail. We travelled from Warsaw to Olsztyn via Białystok and Białowieża to gauge the anxieties and excitements, on the brink of a political change and perhaps also a conflict with a neighbouring regime.

My responsibilities included:

  • preliminary research and fixing
  • on-the-ground fixing and translating
  • videography for social media
  • fact-checking

Client: NPR

Reporter: Rob Schmitz
